Movie Review The Glass Castle

When I was an up and coming young radio talk show host, I had the privilege of interviewing author Jeanette Walls about her remarkable memoir The Glass Castle. Normally, in prepping for an interview in talk radio, you don’t have time to read entire books, you’re forced to skim and pick and choose important portions to discuss in the brief time you have with your subject. In the case of The Glass Castle however, I was lucky enough to have a full weekend and in that weekend, I read the entire book because I simply could not stop myself.

The adage has it that you should never meet your heroes because they never live up to your idealized version of them. Jeanette Walls defied that adage in every way in my brief interview. Just as in her book she was charming, erudite, earthy, and fascinating. She had the kind of wit that comes from combining the mountains of West Virginia with the privilege of Park Avenue. In short, she was as delightful in voice, it was a phone interview, as she was in written form.

Given how harrowing that written form was, the human result is that much more remarkable. It is this version of Jeanette Walls that I took with me into the film adaptation of her remarkable memoir The Glass Castle. The film version stars Academy Award Winner Brie Larson and thank heaven for her, she resembled the Jeanette Walls of my brief but exciting memory.

The Glass Castle stars Larson as Jeanette Walls in 1989 when her career as a gossip columnist for New York Magazine has brought her the kind of fame and security she could never have imagined while growing up in poverty on a West Virginia mountainside. This Jeanette Walls is perfectly coiffed, stylishly dressed, and on the arm of a handsome, nebbishy financial adviser, played by New Girl star Max Greenfield, giving her even more of the fiscal security she never knew as a girl.

We also meet that young, insecure version of Jeanette, played by a pair of young actresses, Chandler Head and Ella Anderson, whose brilliant but damaged father Rex (Woody Harrelson) and scatterbrained artist mother Rose Mary (Naomi Watts) shuttle her from one place to the next always outrunning some bill collector or agent of law enforcement. When she was very young, alongside her three siblings, these changes in scenery seemed like an adventure with her father as part ringmaster and part wizard. As Jeanette comes of age however, the magic begins to wear off and the stench of her father’s alcoholism and emotional abuse becomes unbearable.

Movie Review I Am Number 4

If the half baked Twilight novels can ride teenage Vampires and Chastity to box office bonanza why can't a half baked story about teenage aliens and chastity do the same. That is the unspoken origin story of “I Am Number 4” a supremely lame attempt to clone the success of “Twilight” by trading angsty vamps for angsty aliens.

Number 4 (Alex Pettyfer), alternately referred to as Daniel or John looks like any other handsome teenager but that Number 4 designation kind of tips off the fact that there is more to him than meets the eye. Number 4 is an alien being from the planet Lorian. He is hiding on earth with his warrior bodyguard, Henri (Timothy Olyphant), while he waits for his powers, known to his people as Legacies, to be revealed.

Meanwhile, his numbered brethren are being hunted down by the evil Mogadorians who destroyed Lorien. The Mogadorians have killed 1,2,3 and are now on the trail of Number 4. After nearly revealing himself as an alien living in Florida, Number 4 and Henri move to Paradise, Ohio where Henri hopes to find a human with important information.

In Paradise Number 4 becomes John and begins attending High School because the plot needs him to. At school John meets and falls in love with Sarah Hart (Dianna Agron, Glee). He also by chance befriends Sam (Callan McAullife), the son of the man Henri came to Paradise to find. What luck that Sam has what Henri needs, a rock containing a link between the remaining numbered Lorians.

You don't have to be a psychic to know that I Am Number 4 is building toward a showdown between Number 4 and Mogadorians and that he will likely win this showdown as many sequels ride on his 
winning. Director D.J Caruso brings a modest amount of skill to keeping us distracted from the inevitability of this plot but the material is too weak to keep all the seams from showing.

”I Am Number 4” is a naked cash grab; a supremely lame attempt to lure in “Twilight” fans for a new, easily sequelized, franchise built on iconic genre creatures, aliens instead of Vampires, and great looking actors who do little else than look good. Not to demean young star Alex Pettyfer too much. Pettyfer is a really handsome kid hamstrung by a part that doesn't offer him any challenge.

Pettyfer along with Glee star Dianna Agron and Teresa Palmer, who plays yet another numbered Lorian, Number 6 for those who care, are all great looking and if that were all it took to make a movie work they would have a real hit on their hands. Those of us however, who go to movies for more than just the ogling of pretty people will find “I Am Number 4” lacking.

”I Am Number 4” was the brainchild of legendary liar and literary fraud James Frey who has found another money making scam, young adult fiction. Under the odd pseudonym 'Pittacus Lore' he and co-writer Jobie Hughes have demonstrated just how easy Twilight has made it for hacks to crack the book biz these days. 

Take a legendary genre character, in this case aliens, throw them in a high school setting. Give them bullies and bad guys; teen angst and a little chaste romance and cook for 30 minutes. Bang! You've got a young adult bestseller just aching for a Hollywood adaptation. 

The cynicism pours from every scripted word of “I Am Number 4” and while I don't blame the young actors involved, everyone else in this production should be (but are not) ashamed of this movie. It's our fault for giving them such an easy in, it was our culture that allowed “Twilight” to thrive. As long as we don't ask for more than just pretty, stupid movies then “I Am Number 4” is what Hollywood is going to give us.

Movie Review Fright Night (2011)

"Fright Night" is a mixed bag of a remake. On the one hand there are a few very effective scares and moments of skin-crawling creepiness. On the other hand, the two leads, Colin Farrell as Jerry the Vampire and Anton Yelchin as Jerry's teen neighbor turned Vampire Hunter, are on such awesomely different wavelengths that you're left laughing at Farrell's arch, over the top vamping and yawning at Yelchin's vanilla good guy.

The population of the Las Vegas suburb that is home to the 2011 "Fright Night" is not a very observant group. Their ranks have grown smaller and smaller ever since that handsome overnight construction worker, Jerry (Farrell), moved into the neighborhood. In fact, people keep not returning from his house whenever they visit. Charlie (Anton Yelchin) is among those who don't catch on quickly. Jerry is Charlie's next door neighbor and yet Charlie is quick to deny there is anything odd about Jerry. Charlie's nerdy ex-pal Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) however, is onto Jerry from the get go. 

When Ed falls victim to Jerry it finally gets Charlie motivated to figure out what's going on with his unusual neighbor. "Fright Night" pits Farrell's Jerry against Yelchin's Charlie in a life and death battle in which Charlie must defend his mother, played by Toni Collette, and his hot girlfriend Amy, played by Imogen Poots, while trying not to tell them that Jerry is a Vampire. That notion lasts far too long and causes only a series of painfully awkward scenes where Charlie acts strange and then denies that he's acting strange.

Finally, Jerry puts an end to the awkwardness by flatly demonstrating his Vampire-ness in attempting to kill Charlie, Amy and Mom. This reveal leads to the best sequence of "Fright Night," a late night chase in which Farrell's Vampire chases down the trio in their minivan, gets dragged beneath said minivan, and is eventually stopped, for a few minutes anyway. It's a terrific sequence; unfortunately the rest of "Fright Night" lacks the energy and invention of this sequence and the film as a whole suffers. 

The biggest problem with "Fright Night" is the complete lack of chemistry between Farrell and Yelchin, each of whom is playing a vibe that is completely at odds with the other. In "Fright Night" Colin Farrell chews the scenery so much that Bela Lugosi might advise him to take it down a notch. Anton Yelchin meanwhile, is so staid and low-key you wonder if he has forgotten what movie he's making. Yelchin's entire Vampire fighting comes off as perfunctory as a result of his laconic performance, as if he were only roused to action because the script requires it.

When Yelchin is later partnered with David Tennant, as Vampire expert Peter Vincent, the mismatch of energies becomes even more pronounced. Tennant, a fine actor, best remembered as Dr. Who, sadly comes off as a prancing, slightly more serious version of Russell Brand. You can decide for yourself whether you think that is a good thing or a bad thing; the main point is that Tennant, like Farrell, is more energetic and attention grabbing than Yelchin's dull hero.

Fright Night was directed by Craig Gillespie, whose best work, Lars and the Real Girl, was an oddly sweet movie about an oddball in love with a sex doll. Gillespie used the strange energies of his lead actor, Ryan Gosling, to craft a movie that was unlike any other movie you've ever seen. Gillespie may have been attempting to find something strange in Yelchin's performance but neither he nor Yelchin ever finds that point of uniqueness and the film suffers for it.

Gillespie also, quite unfortunately, is not above hoary clichés like people running upstairs when they should look for a door or a window, or employing a cheap yet popular theme with modern Vampire movies, making up rules for Vampire behavior that are vague enough that Jerry and his Vampire minions can break some rules while adhering to others at the convenience of the plot. I cannot deny that moments of "Fright Night" are honestly scary and creepy but those scenes can't make up for all the stuff that just doesn't work in "Fright Night."
