Movie Review: Two Lovers

Ever since Joaquin Phoenix's meltdown earlier this year on David Letterman and then subsequent you-tube videos, I have been dreading his movie Two Lovers. It was unfair of me to feel that way about the movie. However, it was equally unfair of ....Phoenix.... to burden the film with his antics.

Now, I have seen the film and I feel as if I owe all involved an apology. Two Lovers is a quiet, observant and human drama about a lost soul and the people so willing to find him if he'll let them.

Joaquin Phoenix is Leonard in Two Lovers. When we meet him he is attempting suicide and not for the first time. He survives a plunge into ..Hudson Bay.., thanks to several bystanders but refuses medical care, preferring to wander home in the cold. Leonard is living with his parents, Reuben and Ruth (Moni Moshonov and Isabella Rossellini), and they've been witnessing his behavior ever since his engagement fell apart.

Whiling away the days snapping black and white photos and working at his family dry cleaning business, Leonard's life is changed after meeting two very different women. Sandra (Vinessa Shaw) is the daughter of Leonard's dad's new business partner. Their parents would love for them to get together, as they are soon to merge their businesses.

It's not an arranged marriage however; Sandra is really attracted to Leonard, even to his obvious damage. The other woman who enters Leonard's life is Michele (Gwyneth Paltrow). Michele lives across the courtyard in their shared apartment building. One day as she is seeking a hiding place from an overbearing admirer, she happens upon Leonard and takes advantage of his kindness. He is smitten at first sight but she is clearly, to us, a beautiful blonde fantasy.

Director James Gray reveals his story at a leisurely pace allowing us to observe Leonard and overcome our reservations about his mental state. 2009 has been flush with male performances that are more creepy than quirky and we fear right away that Leonard is just the latest creep. As the story evolves however, Leonard becomes a slightly odd fellow but endearing.

By the end you are rooting for him in ways you never imagined at the beginning. That we can still root for him as he pines for Michele and spends time with Sandra is something quite remarkable. Characters who vacillate as Leonard does can grow tiresome but there is something in the almost childlike, innocent way that Leonard pines that allows us to forgive him.

Some have argued that having one man compete for the affection of Vinessa Shaw and Gwyneth Paltrow is a little far-fetched. Those are people judging Gwyneth Paltrow and not her nuanced and troubled performance. Paltrow's Michele is supposed to be a figure of fantasy and she exists that way throughout. The reality of someone like Michele is far more interesting and well explored in Two Lovers.

Michele is like a virus that infects Leonard, one he cannot shake. She uses him, humiliates him, dashes his hopes and he comes back for more because he simply cannot help it. The fantasy of Michele is so alluring that in the final act even we begin to buy in.

Sandra is not as well fleshed out but that isn't such a bad thing. Vinessa Shaw gives her enough presence and warmth that she is never the girl Leonard might settle for but the one he may or may not really love. She's viable and real and her love for Leonard is as honest as his for Michele.

Two Lovers truly succeeds in its final moments where director Gray and co-writer Ric Menello find just right note of surprising elegance to end on. Two Lovers is moving and cathartic for anyone who has longed for a fantasy at the ignorance of reality. An extraordinary, honest, human drama, Two Lovers is among the best of the year.

Movie Review Big Miracle

Big Miracle (2012)

Movies released in the first two months of any year tend to stink. It's not a rule and this fact is certainly not based on an intention to release bad movies; it's a function of Hollywood studios seeking a time of light movie-going during which to off-load a troubled project that does not hold the potential to battle the box office behemoths of the Spring, Summer and Winter seasons.

This fact makes a movie like "Big Miracle" all the more welcome. This delightful story, based on real life events, is thoughtful, sweet, harrowing and, in the end, uplifting; a very rare combination at this oft-neglected time of the movie-going year.

Based on a true story

Drew Barrymore stars in "Big Miracle" as Rachel Kramer a Greenpeace activist who, when we meet her, is living in Alaska and battling a big oil company, headed by J.W McGraw (Ted Danson), over drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Preserve. When Rachel hears the story of a trio of whales trapped off the coast of an Alaskan whaling village she begins an extraordinary campaign to free the trapped creatures that becomes an international cause.

The reporter who uncovers the whale story happens to be Rachel's ex-boyfriend Adam (John Krasinski). Yes, this fact is a plot convenience but get over it; Barrymore and Krasinski have good banter and romantic chemistry and that brings another layer of joy to "Big Miracle." Also adding to the joy of this terrific, heartfelt little movie is young Ahmaogak Sweeney who plays Nathan, a native of the village; grandson of a local whaling captain, and our narrator.

A colorful and clever supporting cast

There are minor missteps in "Big Miracle" like the casting of Kristen Bell and John Michael Higgins as heartless reporters chasing the whale story for ratings, but for the most part the film is spot on. The majority of the supporting cast is populated by colorful characters like Rob Riggle and James Le Gros as a pair of brothers from Minnesota who's de-icing machine for ice fisherman becomes a key component in keeping the breathing holes open for the whales.

Director Ken Kwapis is a veteran storyteller from TV's "The Office" and the big screen teen adventure "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." Kwapis has a real knack for combining heart and humor without seeming cloying or manipulative. In "Big Miracle" he takes a real life story and invests it with relatable warmth and a cast that earns our sympathy from the opening frame.

Smiling, laughing and Cheering

"Big Miracle" may be the big surprise of the early portion of 2012. This sweet family-friendly does have moments that will be hard for young children to watch but by the end the whole family will be smiling, laughing and cheering.

Movie Review: 40 Days and 40 Nights

40 Days and 40 Nights (2002)

In the 1980's, guys attempting to get laid became a genre all it's own. In the 90's however, political correctness threatened to destroy the horny guy movie. Now in 2002, things have become so inverted that we have a film featuring a guy doing all he can to not get laid. What is this world coming to? 40 Days & 40 Nights stars Josh Hartnett as Matt, a web designer recovering from a bad breakup by having a lot of meaningless sex. After finding sex not to be the answer, Matt decides to go in the opposite direction, no sex at all. 

Of course it is then that he meets the girl of his dreams, Erica (Shannyn Sossamon). Matt decides to try to just be friends with Erica but mistakenly does not explain his current no-sex crusade. Matt's friend and Roommate Ryan (Road Trip's Paulo Costanzo) finds out what he's up to and seize the opportunity to start a website to take bets as to whether Ryan can hold out the full 40 days. 



From there we are treated to the usual romantic comedy situations that desperately throw up lame roadblocks to keep the lovebirds apart. Of course all of the complications could be avoided if the characters were honest with one another, but if they did that there wouldn't be any movie. Director Michael Lehman obviously knew his story was weak so he also throws in a little gross-out humor to fill out the film’s just-over-90 minute runtime.

40 Days & 40 Nights is a well-crafted film. It is well shot, the performances are good. Hartnett occasionally looks like he is straining for the joke, but for the most part comes off as the likeable doofus the character is supposed to be.

In the end the film isn't bad but it is far from memorable. It is the definition of average.

Movie Review: 30 Days of Night

I'm really beginning to dislike the horror genre. Though regular readers and horror fans might argue that I have always hated horror movies, that is not true. I loved Freddy and Jason as a kid. As an adult, I find the Saw films to be utterly ingenious. My issue with modern horror films is the growing, ugly nihilism of the genre. More and more this genre that once exposed our humanity and capacity for bravery and compassion, now comes to exploit our humanity and compassion.

The latest film to trade on our humanity, depicting violent death with style, wit and impoverished morals is the vampire movie 30 Days of Night. Josh Hartnett stars in 30 Days of Night as Eban Oleson the sheriff of Barrow Alaska. Settled on the uppermost point of the United States, Barrow is home to only the most hardy winter lovers. For 30 days of every year Barrow goes into darkness. Many citizens cannot handle the lack of sun and take off. The 150 or so people who stay behind find something they never could have imagined.

A stranger (Ben Foster) arrives in town. He murders all the sled dogs. He steals and burns all of the cell phones. After he is caught by sheriff Oleson, he warns that 'they' are coming. Who are they? The stranger won't say but once citizens begin getting their heads ripped from their bodies, it's clear that 'they' have indeed arrived. Now, the sheriff with his ex-wife Stella (Melissa George) and a ragtag band of survivors must find a way to survive for 30 days when the sun returns and 'they' go back from where they came.

Based on the 2004 graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, 30 Days of Night is stylish, darkly humorous and undeniably cool. And therein lies the problem. Like much of modern horror 30 Days of Night exploits our humanity and compassion to get us to invest in these characters and then destroys them in the most eye catching and gory fashion.

I am conflicted about this because I cannot deny the artistry with which director David Slade delivers this carnage. However, the style, the cool, dehumanizes the characters and takes pleasure in their misery. This brings an ugliness, a pseudo-nihilism to the proceedings that frankly makes me ill. I've grown weary of the stylish presentation of the destruction of humanity.

I get that it's a vampire movie and realism is not a question. And yes; you can argue that the style employed only serves to further distance the characters from reality. My point is however, that the danger that these characters find is meant to earn our sympathy and care and thanks to the talented performances of Josh Hartnett and Melissa George, they do.

We are invested emotionally, engaged by these characters. When these characters, not necessarily Hartnett or George, are violently dissected by vampires, the fillmmakers are taking advantage of that sympathy, exploiting it. For what purpose? Why are our sympathies engaged and then violently and bloodily turned against us?

In the Saw films, James Wan, Leigh Whannell and Darren Lynn Bousman engage us similarly but with a point and a purpose. There is a philosophy behind the carnage, a lesson to be imparted about the gift that is life, the gift that is forgiveness and the possibility of redemption. What lesson do we learn from 30 Days of Night other than fake blood looks cool when splashed on white snow.

Josh Hartnett is one of my very favorite actors. Wearing his vulnerabilty on his sleeve and his wit as well, Hartnett has a talent for characters that win us over from the moment we meet them. His sheriff in 30 Days of Night wins us over from his first scene as he stares into the horizon, an undeclared sadness plagues him as the last sunset for 30 days begins to fall.

Melissa George matches Hartnett in her appeal to our sympathies. Also carrying the burden of memory her Stella just wanted to get in and out of town without Eben knowing she was there. The sadness they share over the end of their marriage is never openly discussed but it is written in their every glance and gesture toward and away from one another. In another movie, one with a depth of feeling for these characters beyond finding unique ways for them to kill vampires or to die violently, Hartnett and George could really make something lasting and beautiful. That is something that the creators of 30 Days of Night are incapable of providing.

What is the point of 30 Days of Night. What are we supposed to take away from it? What is it that we find so exhilarating or exciting about the destruction of humanity. There is no subtext, there are no lessons imparted, this film is merely an exercise in the stylish presentation of hardcore violence. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but I just don't get it anymore.
