Movie Review Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The nostalgia is no longer mine when it comes to Star Wars. A new generation of fans has picked up the mantel and while I still have strong feelings for my childhood favorite film series, it no longer belongs to me and my generation. Star Wars: The Last Jedi affirms the fact that the franchise has transcended what George Lucas created and morphed into something new. Does that mean I didn’t enjoy it? No, it just means that all things pass and while Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a fine movie, it’s no longer something I have deep feelings about.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi picks up the story of the battle between The First Order, led by Supreme Emperor Snoke and his apprentice Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and the Resistance led by General Leia Organa. As we join the story, the Resistance is in grave danger. A First Order destroyer ship is on the tail of the Resistance and preparing to blow Leia and her army out of the universe. This opening scene is shockingly funny and smart and exciting with an outstanding performance from Oscar Isaac as resistance pilot Poe Damron.

From there, the story will branch out into three narratives. The first is the Resistance eluding the Empire, I mean The First Order. The second finds our former storm-trooper turned hero, Finn (John Boyega), teaming with a newcomer named Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) to try to find a hacker who could provide them the key to helping the Resistance escape from the encroaching First Order. The final thread in this triple narrative follows Rey (Daisy Ridley) as she tries to convince Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to return to the Resistance.

The third thread of the narrative is the most powerful with Rey exploring the light and the dark of The Force while Luke tries to overcome his fear after having lost Ben Solo to the dark side. Mark Hamill is Oscar caliber, I kid you not, as the wise and conflicted Luke, still impetuous and still with much to learn even as he has become a master. Daisy Ridley brings out the best in Hamill, and I can’t wait to see where this arc goes.

Classic Movie Review When Harry Met Sally

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

The classic on this week’s Everyone is a Critic podcast is When Harry Met Sally, director Rob Reiner’s 1989 romantic comedy that arguably set the template for every romantic comedy that came after it. Reiner, whose The Princess Bride turns 30 this weekend and inspired our podcast to focus on Reiner’s work, directed When Harry Met Sally from a script by Nora Ephron who would go on to take the mantel of the leading voice in romantic comedies in Hollywood throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s.

The template is thus, two people who seem ill-suited for each other get repeatedly thrust together by fate before sleeping together, montage together and then break up, montage, and finally have a romantic reunion. These movies could write themselves after a while but in fairness to Reiner, when he conceived of When Harry Met Sally, the template wasn’t quite so set in stone. In fact, in pairing the comic Billy Crystal with the actress Meg Ryan, Reiner found something that still feels very fresh in their unusual chemistry.

Harry (Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) met at the University of Chicago in 1978. Sally happened to be headed to New York to take a job as a journalist and Harry headed the same way for work offered to help pay for the trip and share the driving. They immediately don’t get along as Harry launches into his off-putting diatribe about how men and women can’t be friends because sex always gets in the way. Sally, put off by Harry’s blunt talk about how all men want to sleep with her, goes quiet and the two part ways seemingly to never see each other again.

Five years later, on a plane, Harry and Sally reconnect. Sally is in a new relationship while Harry has an even bigger surprise, he’s getting married. That doesn’t stop him from flirting with Sally and even asking her to dinner when they get to their destination. She says no and once again they part. Finally, we cut to another five years later, both Sally and Harry are fresh out of relationships with Harry still stinging from a recent divorce. In a speech that remains remarkable to this day, Harry lays out the scene of the breakup to his pal played by Bruno Kirby. The brutal honesty and dark humor of the story is magnificent, and Crystal demonstrates the kind of acting chops that few other movies have ever allowed him to show. Crystal is a consummate performer and given a brilliant monologue to deliver he becomes a magnetic presence.

Movie Review: Undiscovered

Undiscovered (2005)

I have a theory about this ridiculous slump business at the box office. It is not merely that Hollywood is not making films that people want to see. Rather it is Hollywood releasing films so unwatchable that they poison the theaters that show them with a toxin that drives audiences to their homes in fear of ever returning to a movie theater.

Consider the evidence; Are We There Yet?, The Pacifier, Deuce Bigelow 2. Just typing those titles raised the bile from my stomach. Now in theaters is a film that is far worse than any of the films I mentioned. An abysmal teen rock romance called Undiscovered that should have remained Un-released.

Steven Strait's earnest pronouncements of love and heartbreak are so pathetic that realistically he would be more inclined toward a restraining order than for true love. The one-two punch of Mr. Strait's uninspired delivery and the script's stultifying dialogue is just brutal. I am told that  Strait performed all of his own music in the film and given our current music culture, his music will fit in nicely next to all of the atrocious examples of mainstream pop rock that overflows from most top 40 radio stations.

A music critic friend told me recently that modern rockers have started to go away from writing complex lyrics. Supposedly they want the focus on musicianship, but as the recent MTV Video Music Awards show, it's about projecting rock star image more than having anything to genuinely do with music. By that standard Mr. Strait, a former model, should fit right in. How unfortunate, however, that as his character is written, he's supposed to be a great songwriter. Yeah... not quite.

For her part Ms. James is-- cute. That is honestly the kindest thing I can say about her performance.  James may actually be the victim of having to carry Mr. Strait's D.O.A performance. As the more experienced of the pair she carries most of the dramatic weight, were that there was any to carry in such an airheaded film. Pell James is also saddled with carrying the supporting performance of pop star Ashlee Simpson who at the very least is more interesting to watch than our main character.

Steven Strait stars in Undiscovered as, I kid you not, Luke Falcon. Luke is a wannabe rocker on his way to L.A to make it to the big time. As he is getting off the subway with his brother Euan (Kip Pardue), on his last day in New York City, Luke has a cute encounter with Breier (Pell James). He drops his glove on the train and instead of retrieving it he tossed Breier the other glove just before the train doors closed. Remarking that he met the girl of his dreams on his last day in the city, Luke hops his flight for Los Angeles. What are the odds that Breier will soon be there as well?  It's no long shot, I assure you.

Breier is a model with dreams of becoming an actress, a confession she makes to her modeling agent played by the desperately slumming Carrie Fisher. Soon Breier is off to LA and the cutthroat world of "model slash actresses". It is through her acting class that she meets Clea (Ashlee Simpson) who happens to know Luke (He lets her sing with him at a dive bar). Luke and Breier meet cute once again but Breier cannot hook up as she has a rock star boyfriend who she knows is a cheating, lying bastard.... but she loves him. Ahh true love.

Luke and Breier stay friends and eventually she and Clea help Luke get a following at the club and the attention of a slimy record exec played by the oily Fisher Stevens. Soon Luke has his own model girlfriend played by Shannyn Sossamon, but the life of a rock star is too much for the earnest Luke who longs for the solitude of the songwriter.

No points for guessing that despite all of these roadblocks, Breier and Luke are meant for each other. This is, afterall, a teen romance. What is shocking, though, is how woefully inept the film is even from the limited expectations of its genre. Strait and James are embarrassingly hard to watch as they fumble the film's central romance like teenagers in a first time groping session.

The regrettable script, credited to first time writer John Galt is a meandering, overlong mess of typical romantic roadblocks and dialogue that would make the kids on TV's "One Tree Hill" roll their eyes. If you can somehow fight your way through the longest 93 minutes of your filmgoing life you will see the film end with the kind of Deus Ex Machina that even the lamest of screenwriting books make fun of. The ending involves a cameo by former RoboCop star Peter Weller that sounds as if he were channeling Christopher Walken, only a far less entertaining version of the man.

How serious was Lions Gate about making a real hit movie out of Undiscovered? The producers actually rewrote the picture and retitled the film for a pop song by Ms. Simpson that is naturally on the film's soundtrack. Ms. Simpson's father is credited as a producer on the film and there are two scenes with Simpson onstage that seem to stretch into eternity.

Much of the film is in fact filled out by musical performances from Strait and Simpson. Cut back on the music and Undiscovered might clock in closer to 70 minutes. That is still way too long, though, believe me. The fact is that Undiscovered is the kind of film that usually goes directly to video stores and yet somehow ended up on the big screen as a ninety three minute commercial for its abysmal soundtrack. For anyone who thought Lions Gate's template for success was Miramax, well it's actually something closer to MTV Films.

In what is clearly one of the worst years for cinema in recent history in term of film quality, the box office is doing just fine despite the slump talk.  Undiscovered ranks right near the top of the list of the worst films of the year. As Mr. Ebert famously said in the title of his book about bad movies, I hated, hated, hated, hated, hated, hated, this movie.

Movie Review: The Women

George Cukor's The Women from 1939 is an undeniable classic of wit and feminine mystique. For years many of Hollywood's top actress's including Julia Roberts when she was the biggest star in the world, have dreamed of getting a remake done. It wasn't until uber-producer Diane English, best known for TV's Murphy Brown, put the pieces together that something finally got done.

It should have remained a dream.

Meg Ryan stars in The Women as Mary Haines a rich housewife who devotes her life to her daughter and the many charities she funds. Mary's friends are a devoted lot. Sylvia (Annette Bening) is a high powered magazine editor on the verge of being fired. Debra Messing is the perpetually pregnant Edie. And Jada Pinkett Smith is Alex a character who covers all of the multicultural bases for the movie by being an african american lesbian.

None of these characters has much of a life beyond my one line description of them. The plot revolves around the friends' discovery of Mary's husband's mistress played by the sultry Eva Mendes. Eventually, the friends tell Mary who leaves her husband and finds a life on her own.

And that's pretty well it. If I am to venture a guess I think the movie is meant as a comedy. I didn't laugh much throughout so it's difficult for me to say. I did little much of anything during The Women a movie that was rendered completely unnecessary with the creation of Sex and the City. Carrie and her friends are the logical extension of Cukor's original premise and because it was a TV show it was allowed to be even more in depth and probing of these characters.

No, Sex and the City did not feature an african american lesbian but Samantha had a dalliance with a multi-culti lesbian character. The Sex and the City movie further pushed The Women into the realm of unnecessary by taking its well rounded characters to the big screen, the change in format and the title being the only things that made Sex and the City much different than The Women.

Sex and the City is funnier, sexier, smarter and more caring than this remake of The Women. With Sex and the City out there, it is a wonder why Diane English and Meg Ryan pushed so hard for this film to be made. Was it jealousy? Hubris? Did they think they could do this premise better than Darren Star and company?

Well, they didn't. Skip The Women. Get Sex and the City on DVD.
