Movie Review Dreamin' Wild

The story of Donnie Emerson is a remarkable one. In the 1970s, he and his brother, Joe, made a record. It got recorded and it was made available on vinyl and everything. It appeared that Donnie, if not Joe, had a bright future ahead of him as a singer songwriter. Circumstances conspired and Donnie never found stardom. Then, in 2008, a copy of Donnie and Joe's album was found by a man in Spokane, Washington. He made it his mission to get the record to as many people as possible. The efforts of this man, Jack Fleischer, brought the record to the attention of Light in the Attic records, an indie label that managed to track down Donnie and Joe. 

In an improbable twist of fate, Dreamin' Wild, their 1978 record, found a new life. Donnie began a second act as a respected and revered singer songwriter and now, writer-director Bill Pohlad has brought the amazing story of Donnie, Joe and their family to the big screen in Dreamin' Wild. It's an inherently cinematic underdog story but the typical elements aren't as interesting to Pohlad as the inner turmoil of Donnie Emerson, a man who was racked with guilt over the failure of his music career and struggled with intense mistrust, insecurity and fear over trying to once again live his dream. 

Casey Affleck stars in Dreamin' Wild as Donnie Emerson. A father of two, Donnie's recording studio is struggling to stay afloat. Donnie and his wife, Nancy (Zooey Deschanel) support their family and business by playing covers at weddings and other small venue events. Donnie is facing an uncertain future when this random phone call changes everything. Matt Sullivan (Chris Messina), a record company flack for Light in the Attic Records has moved mountains trying to find Donnie and his brother, Joe (Walton Goggins). 

Somewhere in Montana, someone found a copy of a record called Dreamin' Wild. The record was recorded by the Emerson Brothers in 1978 and it had been mostly a failure. It did lead to Donnie briefly getting a record deal and traveling to Los Angeles, but he soon ended up back home. That's a story that we will eventually uncover as Dreamin' Wilde lays out its story. For the moment, it's nothing but good news for Donnie's family, including his loving and supportive father, Don Sr. (Beau Bridges). The only one who seems reticent about this sudden new discovery is Donnie. 



Movie Review: 500 Days of Summer

500 Days of Summer (2009)

500 Days of Summer is going to hit a little too close to home for some audience members. Myself included. Many of you, I'm sure, have experienced a break up. It hurts but in the best of break ups, you know why it happened. There is comfort in knowing. It allows you to correct mistakes and look forward to a time when you can use your newfound awareness of your flaws in a different relationship.

Some break ups however don't end in such a tidy fashion. That is where 500 Days of Summer begins. Tom doesn't know why Summer rejected him. Sure, she's flighty and odd and says that she doesn't believe in love but surely, after all that they do together, relationship stuff, intimate stuff, she must feel something for him.

We flash back to their first meeting. Shy Tommy notices his boss's new secretary, Summer. He says nothing to her. A week passes and he doesn't say anything, just glances at her from his cubicle where he is a successful greeting card writer. Then, one day in the elevator Tom is alone with Summer and she has noticed in his headphones is The Smiths, one of her favorites.

They bond briefly and then go to another level at an office gathering at a karaoke bar. They begin dating and Tom quickly begins to fall in love. Flash forward and miserable Tom vows to try to win her back. Flashback to the night, seemingly out of the blue, when Summer decides that whatever their relationship is, it's over.

Marc Webb is a successful music video director making his feature debut with 500 Days of Summer which begins with a non-dedication dedication to someone we can only assume is Webb's very own Summer. The subtitle is ended with the word bitch and the movie dives quickly into the world of Tom and Summer.

Webb uses music, color and mood to create for 500 Days of Summer a tone and universe that is unique but familiar. Joseph Gordon Levitt plays Tom with an innocence and wounded pride that will hit home with any deeply insecure man who has ever thought he met the girl of his dreams.

Zooey Deschanel plays Summer with the unknowing arrogance of real beauty. She knows she's attractive even if she plays it off and her awareness of it only makes her more strangely appealing. She is a trainwreck that Tom, and I'm sure many others, willingly stands in the midst of.

Whether Tom and Summer work out their issues I will leave you to discover. The nature of the film is not necessarily love but loss, heartbreak and the way even the worst of relationships can be romanticized into great tragedy in the eye of the beholder.

The sad truth about memories is that they are much more dramatic, romantic, tragic or humorous in memory than they were in reality. Moreover, we only remember the things we want to remember and remember them as we want to remember them. The scene where Summer dumps Tom is open ended for Tom because in his memory it has never ended.

The fact is, that the relationship we had that ended so painfully ambiguous in our memory was likely over in ways that were quite final. We just simply choose not to remember it the way it happened. 500 Days of Summer is Tom's painful memory of his most significant relationship. We experience it with him and are on his side the whole way as if the memories were our own.

The wondrous part of the movie however is that nagging feeling in the back of the mind that indeed it is all one sided. Tom knows that and in our own relationships we are aware of it too. It's easier to romanticise or demonize former lovers. It's a way of coping that requires less self examination.

500 Days of Summer is smart and sweet and in the performance of Joseph Gordon Levit it has a beautiful, battered, beating heart. Levitt and director Webb play out his memories as embellished facts. The highs are extremely high and the lows are a little more in tune because the sadness is new and easier to recall correctly.

500 Days of Summer is a remarkably intelligent examination of one man's most significant relationship. The exaggerated highs and lows and how one comes to terms with the pain and sadness of losing something that meant so much to them. What a fabulous, fabulous movie.

Movie Review: Your Highness

Your Highness (2011)

In "Your Highness" Danny McBride stars as Thaddeus, the loathsome younger brother of Fabious (James Franco), a heroic Knight and heir to the throne of Mourn. Thaddeus spends his days getting high and bedding chambermaids and is content to continue this lifestyle until Fabious returns from his latest quest with a new bride to be, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel).

Dragons, Knights and Minotaur's oh my

Thaddeus is supposed to be his brother's best man at the wedding but he fails to show up, choosing to get high instead. While Thaddeus is M.I.A the wedding is attacked by the evil sorcerer Leezar (Justin Theroux) who takes Belladonna hostage with the intent of impregnating her as part an ancient ritual.

Now, Thaddeus will be forced by his father the King (Charles Dance) to join Fabious and his Knights on a quest to retrieve Belladonna or lose his part of the family fortune. Along the way there will be betrayals and dangerous detours into unfriendly kingdoms and a maiden, Isabel (Natalie Portman) who will join the quest and prove herself more than equal to Fabious and his Knights and of course very superior to Thaddeus.

Satire Fail

The plot of "Your Highness" is a derivative satire cum appreciation of cheesy period action movies like "Dragonslayer" and "Krull." "Your Highness" is pitched to a level of poking fun at these movies but in reality, "Your Highness" plays far less sarcastically than was, I believe, the original intent. It's not that "Your Highness" ever takes its adventure plot seriously but rather that the satire is less pointed than it should be.

That could also be a function of the complete lack of invention in all of the humor of "Your Highness." Random four letter words, penis jokes, bare breasts and marijuana are all alluded to and shown in "Your Highness" and yet none of it earned a laugh. Star Danny McBride, who also co-wrote the script for "Your Highness" with Ben Best, falls for the classic trap of thinking the mere presentation of the outrageous is funny.

Franco and Portman

James Franco is engagingly game as the heroic Fabious. The "127 Hours" Academy Award nominee is at times the only actor in "Your Highness" who understands the high satiric tone the film should be striving for; hitting his hero lines with the perfect mix of self awareness and pomposity. Unfortunately, the friendly chemistry Franco and McBride demonstrated in "Pineapple Express" is greatly lacking in "Your Highness."

Natalie Portman is the greatest victim of "Your Highness." Portman's Isabel fails as satire of comic book warrior chicks or as a send up of any recognizable movie character. Her comic delivery is stiff and her action heroine moments are so competent and believable that it fails as a satire of anything other than an idiot's notion of what women can or cannot do.

In the post-Ripley/Sarah Connor world it's simply not surprising or funny to see a woman kick ass and in the wake of overkill like "Sucker Punch" it's barely even titillating. So, one is left to wonder what function does Portman's character serve? If you have a good idea, I wouldn't mind hearing it.

Danny McBride has shown that he can be very funny in supporting roles in movies like "Pineapple Express" and "Tropic Thunder," among other films. Unfortunately, called upon to be a leading man he falls desperately flat. Worse yet, the satire of medieval adventure movies are just as flat and unfunny as McBride's lead performance.

"Your Highness" simply fails in every fashion.

Movie Review: Yes Man

Yes Man (2008)

In Liar Liar Jim Carrey played a lawyer who could not tell a lie. This, naturally, lead to a number of awkward situations that allowed Carrey to whip himself into a comic frenzy. Now in his latest feature Jim Carrey plays a loan officer who must say yes to everything. If you think this premise allows Carrey to once again whip himself into a wild comic frenzy, you may as well skip the rest of this review. I'm kidding, please keep reading.

Carl has been a sadsack since his wife left him 3 years ago. He rarely leaves his apartment and when he does it is just to rent videos. His best friend Peter (Bradley Cooper) is getting married and expects him to be there for him but even his best pal can't drag him out his funk.

It is not until he attends a self help seminar, at the urging of a strange former acquaintance, Nick (John Michael Higgins), that Carl finally comes out of his shell. The seminar is hosted by Terrence Bundley (Terrence Stamp) whose schtick is getting people to say yes to every opportunity.

With some further prodding from Nick, Carl says yes to giving a homeless man a ride miles out the way. The homeless guy uses up Carl's cell battery and the drive runs him out of gas. However, while filling a gas can Carl meets Allison (Zooey Deschanel). They have instant chemistry and Carl finds the yes to everything strategy could have some real perks.

From there we get a series of scenes that allow Jim Carrey to act more and more goofy and have more and more good things happen to him. That is until, the predictable scene where saying yes finally gets Carl in trouble. A valuable lesson in moderation will be learned while Carrey all the while flips and flops about in search of laughs.

To be fair, Carrey finds plenty of laughs in Yes Man. The guy is a natural comic talent who can't help but stumble into laughs and Yes Man is a movie designed specifically to play into Carrey's strengths. Each scene gives Carrey reason to launch into some kind of comic riff. Some of them are laugh out loud, some, like a Harry Potter themed costume party, lay there in search of a punchline.

The structure of Yes Man may play to Carrey's strengths but the choppy, predictable narrative is in the end terribly unsatisfying. A series of set ups and punchlines fail to serve as a character arc or really a story. There is romantic chemistry between Carrey and Zooey Deschanel but that too is undercut by the lack of a compelling narrative.

Funny in bursts but short one compelling story, Yes Man is a movie for hardcore Carrey fans and no one else.

Movie Review: Wall-E

Wall-E (2008)

Pixar has long been at the cutting edge of computer animation. The key to keeping that edge has as much to do with the latest in technology as with maintaining strong relationships with the most creative minds in the animation biz. People like Finding Nemo creator Andrew Stanton. It was Stanton who dedicated years to the story of a father and son fish who got seperated and had to find each other.

And it is Stanton who returned to work as soon as he wrapped Finding Nemo, on the story of a lonely robot who falls in love. The result of another 5 years of hard work is Wall-E the latest masterpiece from the company that has revolutionized the way we view animation.

It is the year 2700 and humans are long gone from earth. No they weren't wiped out by a nuke or anything post-apocalyptic like. Rather, humanity abandoned it's garbage overflowing planet in favor of a giant, corporate owned space ship while they wait for earth to be cleaned up. The clean up of the planet was left to robots called Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth Class or WALL-E units.

Several hundred years after the first WALL-E units were put to work only one remains. WALL-E has, in his years alone, evolved. He has a personality. His childlike curiosity leads him to collect items of the garbage he busily compacts into cubes for stacking, and keep them in his little home that he has built for himself. 

WALL-E even has a friend, a cockroach who follows him everywhere. WALL-E's tranquility is upended one day by the arrival of a spaceship and a beautiful modern robot that we soon learn is called EVE. It is is Eve's job to search earth for plant life and report back to the spaceship. If she finds something alive, humans may be able to return to earth.

For WALL-E seeing Eve inspires love at first sight and eventually he wins her over. When Eve is called back to the spaceship WALL-E tags along and a whole new adventure begins.

The script for WALL-E has a number of wonderful twists and turns and a central romance between WALL-E and Eve that is more touching than 99% of the romantic comedies we've been subjected to over the past decade. Writer-director Andrew Stanton's wondrous sense of detail applies not merely to the cutting edge animation but also to the characters who are rich, elegant studies of romantic and even science fiction heroes.

The key to WALL-E is it's abundance of heart. If you can watch WALL-E and not be moved by this sweet, sensitive, smart story then you need to see a shrink. This is some of the finest character work we have seen in any movie in years. WALL-E, Eve and the humans aboard the forever orbiting spaceship, especially the captain wonderfully voiced by comic Jeff Garlin, have these rich inner lives that are delicately revealed in smart, sensible doses.

On top of the terrific characters and the romance is a smart sci fi story that goes as far as to adhere to Asimov's 3 rules for robot behavior. The three rules, do no harm, obey commands and protect itself, are played out in important and exciting fashion. I cannot stress enough the extraordinary attention to detail in this script that combines terrific sci fi, a little mystery, a great romance and even a big dance number..

WALL-E truly has it all.

Pixar has done it again. I love, love, love, love this movie. Andrew Stanton, Brad Bird and John Lasseter working under the Pixar banner have delivered the most consistent quality product of any studio in the business. Even as that business tries to limit them by labeling animation a kids genre, these brilliant artists have done more to advance the artform of feature length film than any group of directors you can name.

When Oscar comes around next year it will be a herculean effort for the academy to limit WALL-E to the mere animation Oscar category. WALL-E is a serious, undeniable candidate for the big prize and don't be surprised when it becomes the first Pixar film to break the ranks of live action domination of Best Picture.

WALL-E is just that good. 

Movie Review Our Idiot Brother

Our Idiot Brother (2011)

Paul Rudd is so appealing in "Our Idiot Brother" that you barely notice how thin the story is or how poorly drawn the supporting players are. The star of "Role Models" and "I Love You Man;" Paul Rudd has become known for his fidgety, acerbic, tightly wound comic characters. Now with "Our Idiot Brother" he has expanded his brand to include, shaggy, good natured stoner.

Ned (Paul Rudd) is just a great guy; unassuming, trusting and ready to help when needed. Thus, when a cop, in full uniform, approaches him and asks for some weed, Ned obliges only after hearing how tough things have been for the cop lately. It's a wonderful scene and Rudd's affability sells it.

When Ned gets out of prison, early release as he was everybody's favorite inmate, he finds that his girlfriend (Kathryn Hahn) has kicked him off of their organic farm and moved on with a new guy, Billy (T.J Miller). Worse, she's keeping Ned's beloved dog Willie Nelson.

Homeless, Ned moves back home to New York, briefly living with his mother (Shirley Knight) before crowding into the lives of his uptight sisters. First up is Liz (Emily Mortimer). Liz is married to a jerky documentary filmmaker, Dylan (Steve Coogan), and has two kids; the boy, River (Matthew Mindler), is quickly Ned's best friend.

By the formula, since Ned has two other sisters, he will screw up Liz's life and be fobbed off on the next sister; in this case Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) who makes the mistake of having Ned help her out when she has an important celebrity interview to conduct. He also gets in the middle of her friendship with Jeremy (Adam Scott).

Finally, there is Natalie who seems to be defined by her lesbianism; she lives with her longtime lover Cindy (Rashida Jones). However, when a cute boy artist (Hugh Dancy) shows her some attention, even offering to help out Ned, things in Natalie's life get very complicated and of course, Ned is there to make an even more interesting mess.

"Our Idiot Brother" is highly formulaic and has a highly predictable ending but the journey to get to that ending and the modest detours from formula make it worth your time. This is among Paul Rudd's best performances, a loose, sweet and terrifically funny performance that evokes a younger version of Jeff Bridges's legendary The Dude.

The rest of the cast is not as well defined as Ned and are really only in place to give Ned something to do. It's as if writer Evgenia Peretz and her director brother Jesse Peretz came up with Ned first and then built a movie around him. That sounds bad but Ned is such a terrific character, and so remarkably well played by Paul Rudd, that "Our Idiot Brother" actually kind of works.

"Our Idiot Brother" doesn't work in the typical way that great movies work. However, on its own terms, "Our Idiot Brother" has such a great vibe and is so well centered on Rudd's performance that it works in its own very unique and often very funny way. It's a bit of a strange recommendation, you have to have a soft spot for stoners and Paul Rudd, but I do recommend "Our Idiot Brother."

Movie Review Surf's Up

Surf's Up (2007)

In its brief history Sony Pictures Animation has turned out a pleasant slate of kids pics that, while they aren't the rival of Pixar, are wonderfully imaginative and lovingly crafted. Monster House and Open Season were two of 2006's most pleasant surprises and showed an aesthetic that is becoming a Sony Animation staple. It's a watercolor, computer animation combination that occasionally looks quite breathtaking.

The latest Sony Pictures Animation project, the Penguin comedy Surf's Up, is not as accomplished as Monster House or as fun as Open Season, but it does show the potential of the talented group at Sony Animation and the likelihood that, with a little more care and attention, there is a chance for a real masterpiece from this rising animation company.

Ever since he was a small penguin Cody (Shia Le Beouf) has wanted to surf. When he was very young Cody met the legendary surfer Big Z who gave him a souvenir medallion that he has worn for the rest of his life. Shaping a piece of ice into a board, Cody surfs the relatively small Antarctic swells in hopes of one day traveling to Penghu Island for the Big Z memorial tournament.

Cody gets his chance when a talent scout arrives, riding on whale-back. Cody impresses him with his persistence, if not his surfing and soon Cody is on his way to the big show. There he meets Roger the chicken (Jon Heder) who quickly becomes his new best friend. He also meets Lena (Zooey Deschanel) who catches his romantic fancy.

Then there is Geek (Jeff Bridges) , a mysterious hermit who takes Cody in after he has an accident while surfing. The two bond and soon Geek is Cody's mentor; preparing him for the tournament and a showdown with the jerky defending champion Tank (Diedrich Bader).

Surf's Up plays out in a cartoon documentary style that works to set it apart from other similar animated films. The format allows humorous digressions like a look back at Big Z's classic surfing movies, reminiscent of the legendary Endless Summer documentaries. Another strength of the documentary structure is the straight to the camera interview moments, especially those featuring the cute young penguins with their wonderfully humorous greek chorus commentaries.

Comedian Brian Posehn also shines in these brief interview segments with pitch perfect sibling rivalry banter with Shia Le Beouf.

The terrifically talented voice cast of Surf's Up is a real joy to behold. Shia Le Beouf brings to life Cody's childlike wonderment with an edge of youthful arrogance. Jeff Bridges meanwhile will no doubt remind many adult viewers of his most iconic character, the dude from The Big Lebowski, sans the white russians and the bathrobe.

Zooey Deschanel's distinctive voice has an edgy sarcastic quality that she can turn sympathetic but only when absolutely necessary. Jon Heder delivers a slightly controversial turn as Roger the chicken. The character is supposed to be sweetly naive but he comes off more like a classic stoner character, not exactly kid friendly.

The animation of Surf's Up is pretty terrific. Sony Pictures Animation has followed the Pixar model and is developing a signature style. Combining computer animated aesthetics with a sort of water color look, Sony's animators bring an element of classic hand drawn animation to their CG work. The closing scene of Surf's Up, set inside the curl of a wave, is a breathtaking sight, one of the finest animated moments of any cartoon you've ever seen.

Surf's Up could stand to be a little funnier, with a quicker pace but overall it's pleasant, non-threatening and energetic enough that the kids will be engaged and mom and dad won't be bored. Most importantly, Surf's Up is a signpost of great things to come from the rising Sony Animation brand. A strong, if not as impressive, follow up to the terrific Monster House and the entertaining Open Season, Surf's Up is worth the price of a matinee admission.

Movie Review: Bridge to Terabithia

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Writer Catherine Paterson's children's novel Bridge To Terabithia contains a dedication to her son and her son's best friend. That friend had passed away some years ago but it was a tragedy that was a large part of the creation of the novel. Now on film, Bridge To Terabithia is a wonderful dedication to the imagination of children and the child's capacity to love and to heal.

Jess Arons (Josh Hutcherson) has always been an outcast. At school and even at home amongst his four sisters. He has never had a friend until a new girl moves in next door to him. Her name is Leslie (Anna Sophia Robb) and though it takes a little time the two eventually become best friends. Playing in the woods behind their houses the two invent a whole new world for themselves that they call Terabithia.

There is a tragedy that comes to take a large role in the end of Bridge To Terabithia. It is a surprise but not really a shock. Some will call it manipulative by nature because it involves a child. However, I feel that because Bridge To Terabithia so well establishes these characters, and so well tells this story that such an ending is fairly earned. It's also true to writer Catherine Paterson's novel.

Directed by Rugrats creator Gabor Csupo, Bridge To Terabithia is a magical crafting of the childs mind rendered on screen. Csupo and writers Jeff Stockwell and David Paterson strike a perfect balance between childish wonder and the big screen's ability to render the imagination on film. Movies can demystify the imagination by bringing it to life. The trick to Bridge To Terabithia the movie is to show children building a world from their mind while allowing that world to seem somewhat ordinary to the rest of us, as if we were simply watching kids play.

There are special effects in Bridge To Terabithia, many of them quite striking. But the reason they work is because of the strong acting of stars Josh Hutcherson and Anna Sophia Robb. Gabor Csupo does well to allow the characters to create the wonder of Terabithia before diving headlong into massive special effects that bring the childish imagination to life.

Anna Sophia Robb has a big, bright future ahead of her. The soon to be 14 year old actress has the impish cuteness of Drew Barrymore and much of the spirit of Dakota Fanning. In Bridge To Terabithia; Robb lights up the screen with a spirited performance that is really pure joy. Though she was unimpressive in the similarly family oriented Because of Winn Dixie, Robb really impresses in Bridge To Terabithia with a top notch performance.

Watching Robb and co-star Josh Hutcherson running through the forest of their Terabithia, creating their world from scratch as they walked, can't help but make one flashback to their own childish paradise. It's a wonderfully universal experience; so well captured by this lovely imaginative film.

Bridge To Terabithia comes from Walden Media; the family movie giant. Known for biblical allegory, and children's literature adaptations, Bridge To Terabithia is notable; not for its religion, which it wears on its sleeve, but rather for the realistic experience of religion by the children in the film. When Leslie, whose family is not very religious, joins Jess and his family at church; the scene leads to a theological discussion that only kids could have. A perfect recreation of the fear and wonder that religion inspires in young children, and a very brave scene by the moral standards of a Walden Media product.

Bridge To Terabithia is one of the most censored books of all time. The novel's use frank religious discussions and of course the death of one of the characters lead many parents to want the book banned from schools. Again, Walden Media is very brave to make this film and stay true to the story. This is a far more challenging film than anything Walden has produced before and they deserve to be commended for taking the risk.

A note to parents who aren’t familiar with the book: it is quite sad and you may have some hand holding to do by the end but it's worth it for such a terrific movie. Bridge To Terabithia shines with bright young stars and a heart rending story that is very well told. Anna Sophia Robb is a young star to watch and director Gabor Csupo shows he is talented well beyond his work in animation.

Bridge To Terabithia is the kind of kids movie that film critics long for. Challenging yet sentimental, smart but accessible. This is one of the best kids movies in a very long while.

Movie Review The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

The tortured development process for the film adaptation of Douglas Adams' cult novel The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is one of those "Only in Hollywood" tales. As told in David Hughes' book "The Best Sci-Fi films Never Made," the story begins in 1982 with a series of Hollywood Producers following the money rather than any quirky well told sci-fi story. After Douglas Adams' radio series became a smash in Britain and then became a best selling book, Hollywood took notice.

Once the film was transferred to British TV and once again became a hit, Hollywood heavyweights came calling. First, Ivan Reitman wanted to make the film with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis in the cast. He abandoned the project after a year of stops and starts and budget battles, instead he took Murray and Ramis and made Ghostbusters. After that a number of big names (i.e. Bruce Willis, Michael Keaton, Jim Carrey) all floated into and out of the development process.

Poor Douglas Adams waded through bad adaptation after bad adaptation, some with his name unfortunately attached to them. Until 2001 when it looked as if the sun were finally shining on the project. Adams completed what looked like a final script and director Jay Roach, fresh from the hit Meet The Parents and with Austin Powers in his recent past, was ready to helm the project. Fate can be very cruel; Douglas Adams died of a heart attack before the film could even begin scouting locations.

Five years later with the assistance of first time director Garth Jennings and execs at Disney, The Hitchhiker's GuideTo The Galaxy finally made it to the big screen and though it is flawed and not entirely satisfying to its loyal cult audience, it is a solidly entertaining and a surprisingly welcoming sci-fi comedy.

Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) is having a bad day. His home on the outskirts of some tiny unnamed British hamlet is about to be bulldozed in favor  of a new expressway. That, however, is the least of his problems, as his good friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def) is trying to tell him. It seems Arthur's house is not the only thing on Earth about to be bulldozed.  The entire planet has been scheduled for demolition by an officious race of aliens called Vogons.

Luckily for Arthur, his buddy Ford is an interstellar hitchhiker who is able to spirit Arthur off the planet before it's destroyed. Thus begins a most extraordinary adventure that will cross the galaxy with a cast of characters not seen outside of an acid trip. After escaping the Vogons, Arthur and Ford stow away aboard the most beautiful ship in the galaxy, the heart of gold, which is currently captained by the new President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell).

Along with Zaphod is Marvin a super intelligent but constantly depressed robot (voice by Alan Rickman, character by Warwick Davis) and Trillian (Zooey Deschanel), an earth girl who has brief history with Arthur; she blew him off at a party to go into space with Zaphod just prior to the world exploding. The crew is on the run, one of Zaphod's two heads, yes I said two heads, has kidnapped the other and stolen the spaceship. They are headed across the galaxy to ask a giant computer the meaning of life.

If that is not esoteric enough for you the film is filled to the brim with other subtle bits of humor and wordplay, the best of which comes from the voice of Stephen Fry narrating from the Hitchhiker's Guide. Accompanied by colorful illustrations, the Guide often interrupts the film to deliver an interesting and helpful tidbit about this or that. Fry's eloquent British tones lend an intellectual air to the film's unusual details and the books' quirky dialogue.

By far my favorite part of the film was the opening song called, "So long and thanks for all the fish ''. Sung from the perspective of dolphins, the song tells us that dolphins had for years tried to warn humans about the impending end of the world but we mistook the warnings as cute tricks. Clever and imaginative, the song is the perfect example of the film's oddball humor.

Director Garth Jennings is one half of a commercial and video directing team called Hammer and Tongs who have directed music videos for REM and Blur. Jennings is inexperienced as a feature film director but it's likely that aided his work here rather than harmed it. Jennings directs with wild abandon, never pausing to consider what can't be done. While the story has been compromised for the sake of mainstream appeal, Jennings' direction is perfectly in sync with the books' bizarre humor.

Martin Freeman is best known for his supporting role in the original British version of Ricky Gervais' "The Office". Freeman has the perfect everyman quality that fits with Douglas Adams' conception of Arthur and, better yet, Freeman whines and complains and begs for a good cup of tea just as you would imagine Arthur from the book would. Unfortunately Freeman fails miserably in connecting with American actress Zooey Deschanel in the film's romantic subplot.

The best performance in the film is Sam Rockwell as Zaphod. Rockwell combines the manic energy of Jim Carrey with the rock star look and manner of David Lee Roth. The two heads bit is funnier than it sounds and provides a number of good gags. Mos Def is a calming influence in the sometimes manic, over the top film. His Ford Prefect is often beatific and obtuse but always supportive and helpful to Arthur. Mos Def may not be what fans of the book had in mind when they thought of Ford but he puts any misgivings away with his performance.

Naturally, with such a well known cult object as "Hitchhiker's Guide" the battle between what appeals to the cult and what can appeal to mainstream audiences is a difficult balancing act. Hollywood studios would prefer every film had the same set of easily salable elements so obviously something as quirky as Hitchhiker's Guide is not their cup of tea. The books are esoteric and dry and very British. To Americanize them and make them more mainstream some things are lost in translation and others are added, like a romance between Arthur and Trillian that is the film's weakest element.

Nothing about the romance ever feels right, likely because it was not part of the book. The whole thing feels shoehorned into the plot and because it's all so earnest it does not fit well with the oddball elements of the surrounding film. Zooey Deschanel could really do something with this part but unfortunately with the romantic element forced on her she becomes a functionary of the plot as opposed to a fully fleshed out character.

Jennings does not linger on the romance plot, though.  He is more concerned with cramming the film with exciting visuals and he succeeds more often than not. Watch out for John Malkovich as a half man, half machine in one of the picture's most striking visuals and a terrific scene in which the entire cast is turned into string. These scenes vividly bring to life some of the off-the-wall elements that made "Hitchhiker's Guide" such a cult object.

Overall Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy is an imperfect but highly enjoyable sci-fi comedy. It is not exactly what fans of the book would want, but it's not a bad thing that the filmmakers opened up just enough for new fans to get it. The balance is difficult but works for the most part, enough at least for me to recommend it for your movie dollar.
